We dedicate all our efforts and resources to providing a clean, safe, secure, and comfortable environment which enhances the education process
Johnny Hibbs
Chief Operations Officer
Facility Services
My job is to go through schools to make sure they are using their energy efficiently and educate those on how to better their indoor air quality
Going to meetings
Go to construction sites to see how they are using the energy there
Outdoor air enters and leaves by Infiltration, Natural, and Mechanical Ventilation
Infiltration:
Flows through openings, joints, and cracks in walls, floors, and ceilings, and around windows and doors
Natural:
Flows through Opened windows and doors by wind and temperature differences indoors and outdoors
Mechanical:
Removes inside air and replaces with conditioned clean air from the outside
Outside air and inside air are the same
-The air is mechanically filtered and
cooled
-Then is put into a room
-What ever is in the room is added
to the cooled air
-The painter is suppose to caulk the windows to prevent unwanted air
-Cold air rushing outside attracts pest like cockroaches
-Existing holes in the wall, floor, or ceiling need to be plugged
-Yes and NO
-Refrigerators, microwaves, pets, plants, and lamps on thermostats
-It’s one thing to have a microwave and refrigerator for every 10 rooms but to have one in almost every single room is an energy waster and affects the indoor air quality
The EPA recommends that a classroom should be between 72 – 76 °F
The nominal is 74°F
Below 70°F students don't work well
Lamp has been off for a while with the current room temp. being at 72.4°F which is just over the required temp.
Thermostat is $200
Makes A/C run longer
Decreases the lifetime of the RTU
-Moisture from fridge
-If turned off the ice will melt and make a mold
-Everything is plugged in
-AND during the summer
-IS THIS A HOME OR A SCHOOL???
-Temperature
-Noise
-Humidity
-Light
-Having a lamp on a thermostat
-The temp is a lot lower than in the halls
-There is more noise since the A/C is running
-The humidity increases because of the A/C Running
-Then there is unwanted light by the door
-Can cause and asthmatic episode
-Better indoor Environment
-Less absenteeism
-Higher student achievement
-More funding from the State
-Energy efficiencies
-VOC
-Particulates
-Asthma triggers
-Asbestos
-Absenteeism
-Plants
-“bake out”
-Schools and IAQ
-Volatile Organic Compound
-Gases emitted from solids and liquids
-Examples
-Paints, paint strippers, cleaning
supplies, pesticides, building materials
& furnishings
-Office equipment such as copiers,
printers & correction fluids
-Craft materials including glues,
adhesives, permanent markers, and
photographic solutions.
-Particles that are emitted in the air by liquids or
solids
-Are molds and pollens which are needed on this
planet
-Examples:
-Thick, black smoke belching out of the exhaust
pipes of vehicles
-Swirls of dust picked up by the wind
-Ash and soot coming from your campfire.
-Two Main Types of Particulates
-Resparable
-Can travel hundreds of miles
-Size is 100 times smaller than a human hair
which is 2.5 micrometers
-Inhalable
-Travel as much as 50 miles
-Size of a paper clip 10 micrometers
-It is what it sounds like
-Absent rate from school
-The number one cause is ASTHMA
-People with asthma have a greater absent
rate (absent 8.4 % of the days)
-People with non-asthmatic have the least
absent rate (absent 5.9% of the days)
-As people get older the absent rate
decreases, but people with asthma, the
absent rate starts to increase
-Mineral Fiber for building construction
materials
-Fire Retardant
-EX: Roofing shingles, ceiling and floor tiles, paper products, automobile clutch, brake, and transmission parts
-If asbestos products are damaged, disturbed by repair or demolished
-Cause Significant Health Problems
Plants release H2O and absorb CO2
With rising CO2 levels, the plants’ won’t absorb as much CO2 and won’t release enough water
Plants and trees is our natural A/C
One tree can release up to ten’s of gallons of water every day into the air
With more CO2 then there is more amount of pollen
Need plants the size of a small gym just to support one person
Soil has unwanted pest in it
So Inside plants WON'T HELP...
Before the the 1930's to the 1940's who are asthmatic individuals were able to reach the age to have babies
But now with modern medicine asthmatics started to grow up as an adult and have children
Now children have inherited Asthma from their parents
-With greenhouse gases increasing:
-Causes plants & molds to boost pollen and spore production
-Worsening allergies of all people
-Facts (2004)
-14 million Adults have asthma
-9 million children have asthma
-The number of children with
asthma have doubled since
1984
-Urban areas have 60% more
pollution than rural areas
-Just before the industrial
revolution carbon levels
have risen from 280ppm to
379ppm as of today
-Ragweed
-Is a plant that 40 million
are allergic to
-AKA Hay Fever
-A process to detoxify a room or building
-Reduce volatile gases from new furniture and
chemicals used in construction materials
-How to “bakeout”
-Seal your house by closing all windows and
doors
-Remove People, Plants, and Pets
-Turn up the heater all the way preferably during
the summer
-After 24 hours open all windows and doors and
fan out the house
-For a brand new home it is best to do this
process for 5-10 days

-About…
-Air Fresheners
-Plug ins
-Candles
-Are these good for the environment?
-Well they are not..
-Surprised…
-I’m to, I thought the exact same thing when I was asked that very question
-Air fresheners puts particulates into the air
-Candles release Fly Ash
-Comes from the stuff that you buy
-For EX: phones, cars, computers, plastic,
and anything that you have
-If you were to buy a car calculator
-The plastic pellets had to be delivered
-The mold had to be made
-The electronics had to be made
-All the parts that make up the
motherboard had to be made
-All the energy used to make the
calculator
-So everything that is incorporated into building just one item is apart of your carbon footprint
-So when you go to the store just think of how big your carbon footprint will be!
-Don’t waste electricity
-Don’t use unnecessary items in the classroom
-Only buy things you need for the classroom
-Turn things off when not used
-Use only one room in each hall for refrigerators and microwaves
-This is the biggest problems to accomplish
-Having these kinds of things affects a students ability to learn properly
-Would you pick up a spider?
-Well NO right
-That’s because you are afraid of the unknown
-If you pick the spider up then you are not afraid
In April 2012 just R. L. Turner High School spent $40,000 in just electricity
Americans use 4 times more energy than the rest of the world
That gases emitted inside a room are 10 times as greater as if they were emitted outside
Each American has a bigger Carbon Footprint
Did you know that 1/3 of Earth’s Bioshere is made up of microbial soup
